Literacy Volunteers -Mohawk/Hudson changes lives and builds community by strengthening literacy skills. Through student-centered education, Literacy Volunteers-Mohawk/Hudson helps adults with basic needs in reading, writing or speaking the English language achieve their goals as individuals, family members, workers, and citizens.

Our Programs

Literacy Volunteers-Mohawk/Hudson provides:

  • Individualized instruction for adults in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Training workshops for tutors of Basic Literacy or English as a Second Language students.
  • Guidance and support for students.
  • Tutor support including materials, consultation, and supplemental training.
  • Access to training software.
  • A newsletter for students, tutors, and supporters.
  • Family literacy activities.

Literacy Volunteers-Mohawk/Hudson (LV) is a non-profit organization that provides free individualized instruction to English-speaking adults seeking help with basic reading and writing skills (from non-readers up to 8th grade level) or to speakers of other languages with conversational English. Trained volunteers provide two hours of individualized instruction, once or twice a week, in mutually convenient locations throughout the Capital Region. Our volunteers are dedicated to helping people gain independence through the attainment of their individual literacy goals.

Our program is student-centered. We focus on the needs of the individual to help him/her improve skills within the context of specific life goals. Each student's experience with LV is entirely personalized, and centers on the student's life situation. Tutors are trained in formal needs assessment, informal information gathering techniques and goal-setting strategies. During sessions, both short- and long-term goals are discussed and agreed upon by both student and tutor. As instruction progresses goals are evaluated and revised. The student's data form the basis for highly individualized lesson plans.
